Once delivered the staircase should be stored in a cool dry place positioned above the ground on timber battens. The staircase should then be protected from the weather and extreme temperatures with a tarpaulin sheet. Polythene sheet should not be used as this can act like a greenhouse and encourage damp or humid conditions. As with all internal joinery, stairs should not be fitted in a building which has not been adequately dried out. Failure to maintain the moisture content of the product as delivered may have a seriously detrimental effect on the stairs and how they fit.
A risk assessment should be carried out before installation as staircases can be heavy and an assisted lift is usually required or even mechanical lifting arrangements.
