Upgrades to Colwyn Bay railway station – North Wales

Case Study

As part of a wider upgrade scheme of the North Wales Railway line, Parry Joinery have recently been involved in the completion of important refurbishment work at Colwyn Bay station.

The improvements carried out by R J Parry Joinery Ltd involved the manufacture of gable end windows and fixed sash and opening sash windows, using a combination of treated redwood softwood and sapele hardwood. The work was carried out to match the original traditional styles, shapes and sizes of the existing station, including matching mouldings and manufacturing shaped corner pieces. The existing frosted glass was replaced with clear (toughened) safety glass. Truss splices were also manufactured using green heart hardwood to match the curved designs.

Similar work by Parry Joinery has already been carried out at other North Wales line stations including Rhyl, Llandudno, Bangor, Chester and, as can be seen in the photographs, they have all been finished with a traditional heritage green and red paint finish to create a uniform and stylish look to these historical stations.
The work carried out is part of a large scale £50m upgrade project of the North Wales Railway line started in 2018 with the aim of improving the resilience and reliability of the line.
